Acne Treatment Q & A

How are lasers used to treat acne?

Aesthetic laser treatments can be an effective part of any acne treatment plan. Dr. Morris and the team at Morris Medical Center use LightPod® laser technology — which is gentler and more effective than traditional laser technology — to target acne and help clear it up. The precision laser works by heating up the acne bacteria, sebaceous gland, and surrounding skin, which effectively destroys the bacteria, reduces oil production, and helps reduce swelling and inflammation. This treatment is ideal for long-time acne sufferers as well as those who don’t want to take oral acne medications or haven’t had success with them. LightPod laser treatments have few side effects and generally require very little recovery time.

What kind of results can I expect?

LightPod laser treatments are effective for a variety of acne conditions, including severe facial acne, cystic acne, acne on dark skin, and acne on the chest, shoulders, or back. The treatments are suitable for adults as well as teenagers, and can be used on patients with any skin type. Patients generally find that one treatment provides immediate relief, leaving their skin less irritated and comfortably dry. Although most patients experience a significant amount of clearing, results can vary from person to person. Optimal results are best achieved through a series of treatments scheduled over the course of a few weeks. While improvement will be gradual and progressive, the results are lasting.

Does the treatment work for acne scars?

When severe acne clears up, your body produces collagen to support the healing process. If it produces too much collagen, you can develop raised acne scars. If it doesn’t produce enough collagen, you may develop depressed acne scars, or small pits in the surface of your skin. LightPod laser technology can diminish the appearance of acne scars, or even remove them altogether, by sending controlled pulses of light deep into the dermis, where it causes miniscule perforations in the scar tissue. As your skin begins to heal below the surface, it triggers the production of collagen and makes the underlying layers of skin more taut. This treatment can help reduce the widespread appearance of acne scarring, has few side effects, and requires almost no recovery time.
